Senate confirms Rollins to USDA post

The U.S. Senate on Feb. 13 voted 72 to 28 to confirm Brooke Rollins to serve as secretary of agriculture. Representatives of the biofuel and bioenergy industries have spoken out in support of her confirmation.

U.S. operatable biofuel production capacity was unchanged in November 2024, according to data released by the U.S. EIA on Jan. 31. Feedstock consumption was up from both the previous month and November 2023.

Valero Energy Corp. on Jan. 30 released Q4 financial results, reporting that both its ethanol and renewable diesel segments were profitable during the period. The company also announced that its SAF project in Texas is fully operational.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbot on Jan. 29 announced Summit Next Gen LLC’s proposed ethanol-to-SAF project under development near Houston qualifies under the state’s new Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation (JETI) program.

The Trump administration has asked the U.S. Supreme Court to pause the small refinery exemption (SRE) lawsuit currently pending before the court while the agency “reassesses the basis for and the soundness of the denial actions.”

The South Dakota House of Representatives on Jan. 27 voted 49 to 19 to approve a bill that would prevent the use of eminent domain for the development of CO2 pipelines, in a move opponents say will cause economic harm to the state.

South Dakota lawmakers on Jan. 24 voted 10 to 3 to advance a bill that aims to prevent the use of eminent domain for the development of CO2 pipelines. Representatives of ethanol and SAF producers testified against the legislation.

Brooke Rollins, President Donald Trump’s nominee to serve as secretary of agriculture, discussed her support for biofuels and addressed concerns over her ties to the oil industry during a Senate confirmation hearing on Jan. 23.

The USDA on Jan. 15 published an interim rule that establishes guidelines for quantifying, reporting and verifying GHG emissions associated with the production of biofuel feedstock commodity crops grown in the U.S.

The U.S. EIA maintained its forecasts for 2025 renewable diesel and biodiesel production in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook, released Jan. 14. The 2025 outlook for “other biofuel” production, including SAF, was also unchanged.
