The U.S. EPA on Aug. 14 published a list of 165 candidates who have been nominated to service on the agency’s Science Advisory Board. The agency is accepting public comments on the nominees through Sept. 4.&nbsp;The SAB is a charted Federal Advisory Committee established in 1978 to provide independent scientific and technical peer review, consultation, advice and recommendations to the EPA administrator on the scientific bases for the agency’s actions and programs.Members of the SAB are non-EPA scientists, engineers, economics, and behavioral scientists. Traditionally, these professionals have been nationally and international recognized experts in their respective fields. Members are appointed for a three-year term and serve as special government employees who provide independent expert advice to the agency. The SAB typically includes approximately 45 members.&nbsp;In January 2025, the EPA announced it would “reset” federal advisory committees “to reverse the politicization of SAB and [the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee] under the Biden-Harris administration.”&nbsp;Shortly after Trump’s January 2025 inauguration, then-members of the SAB were dismissed. The EPA in March announced its intent to solicit nominations for the SAB and in May officially began accepting nominations. The agency is now accepting public comments on the resulting 165 candidates.
